♻️ Facts: Economic inequality is real: on January 2023, the CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations included 53 women. Only.
Facts and principles tips #2023-24
Gender discrimination describes the situation in which people are treated differently simply because they are male or female, rather than on the basis of their individual skills or capabilities.
Girls and women suffer most of the negative impact of rigid gender norms and roles. They are more likely to experience restrictions on their freedom and mobility, experience epidemic levels of violence and harassment across the globe, and have fewer opportunities to choose how to live their lives.
But boys and men suffer too. Ideas about what it means to be a man force boys and men to behave in minimal ways, which can harm them. Harmful masculinities encouraged in boys perpetuate the cycle of discrimination and inequality.
Denying people the freedom to choose their path because of gender prevents them from fulfilling their full potential.
→ There is a lot we can do to help build a more gender-equal world. Understanding the deep roots of gender inequality and challenging discrimination when we see it are the first steps.
What we know/ what we need:
As of January 1, 2023, the CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations include 53 women – the largest number in history but still just a tiny fraction of an elite group that earned $18.3 million on average in 2021.
In most countries, the gender pay gap has decreased in the last couple of decades.
The gender pay gap is more significant for older workers.
The gender pay gap is smaller in middle-income countries – which tend to be countries with low labor force participation of women.
All over the world, firms tend to be managed by men. And, globally, only about 18% of firms have a female manager.
Despite falling in recent decades, there remains a substantial pay gap between the average wages of men and women.
Women often have no control over their personal earned income.
In many countries, women have limited influence over essential household decisions.
Land ownership is more often in the hands of men.
Gender-equal inheritance systems have been adopted in most, but not all, countries.
→ The list is very long and deserves more attention. So, to spare your time I will dedicate a full series on gender gap and sustainability during the next few weeks.
